All Hallow's Eve

Happy Halloween!

Just a bit of Church history for everyone ... did you know that today, Halloween, actually evolved from a triduum of feasts on the Catholic liturgical calendar? October 31st was marked as the Eve of those Hallowed, followed by All Saints Day (more on that tomorrow), and All Souls Day on November 2nd.

OK, history lesson over!

Given that I was VERY allergic to chocolate as a child, Halloween wasn't among my favorite holidays. As a matter of fact, the only vivid memories I have of the day were marching with all of you in the Carteret Halloween Parade, and going door to door in our uniforms afterwards (remember using our shakos to collect the candy?).

The boundaries between our corps and other lives really blurred for me during my high school and college years, and it's clear it was the same for most of you. If there's any doubt, here's some proof from Gallery 7, page 8 on www.saintsdrumcorps.com:

Weekend Wonderings: Connections

Here it is, an almost-rainy Friday morning here in Central Jersey, and I'm thinking 'bout all of you.

This time, eight months ago, you might have been a passing thought or memory. Now? Well, you're even filling up my daybook! In some cases, we're connected more now than we were when we marched.

Let's see - this week alone, I've been on the phone with Lisa (and will see her today), Althea, Pic, and Jackie, and have exchanged e-mails with another dozen or so of you. I've been squeezing in my own consulting work (thanks, Pic, for the referral!) around Saints stuff. While it should really be the other way around, it's what needs to be right now with the mini-reunion coming up. How did the parents who helped run the corps back then do it all?

Each time I see the response counter go up in Survey Monkey, it's so much fun! Yes, I do realize that probably doesn't speak well of what my life is like, but I assure you that's not really the case. Even Richard (who probably won't be joining us) gets excited with me as I call across the hall to him with each new name (and stories to go with them!).

As I mentioned in an e-mail this morning, I'm blown away by how many of the Saints Are Marching In from places far and wide to join us on November 9th.

If you're still on the fence about joining us, now's the time to do it. Special note to the Florida folks: You can still grab flights from under $200 out of most of the major airports (and only $118 from Miami!) on Continental. There may even be better deals out there with some of the other carriers.

For those who will be with us, see you in two weeks!!! For the rest, we'll try our best to share pictures and words that will make you feel like you were part of it all ...

Weekend Wonderings: Dream Jobs

If you're already making money "doing" corps or something related to the skills you picked up back then, think of this Scribblings entry as some sort of validation if you'd like.

For the rest of us, here are two questions for you: If someone told you at this moment that your ideal job in corps / guard is available to you for the asking, what would it be? Also, do you take it, or keep doing what you're doing right now?

Here are some revisionist criteria to consider, if needed, to help you to dream a bit and decide if working in corps or guard is for you:
  • You're physically / mentally healthy enough, and have all the skills needed to do the work.
  • If you'd like to do it full-time, you can afford to do the work without pay, or they're paying you more than enough to do it.
  • If you're interested in part-time work, the schedule around everything else that you want or need to do will accommodate the gig with no problem.
  • Corps and guard culture (for lack of a better term) is exactly what you want it to be - like we remember it from the mid-70s, as it progressed during the 80s, as it is now, etc. (This item was added for those who just don't like what corps and guard have become.)
  • The important people in your life are fully supportive of your decision to take the gig.

If I've left something off the list that poses a potential barrier for you, feel free to add it as you consider your career change ...

I haven't thought about this topic in quite awhile. Time spent over the past few weeks has brought me back there, and I find myself wondering. If you're looking for my answer, you'll have to wait a bit - I want to savor the possibilities for just a tad longer before making my decision.

I hope you'll share your dreams with us - feel free to use the Comments area below, the Guest Book on www.saintsdrumcorps.com, or get in touch with me directly at joparente.saintsdrumcorps@gmail.com.

All for now - corpsdially yours from jo!

PS: In case you're wondering, right now there are 47 people registered for the November reunion. About 20% are members who are coming in from outside the greater Jersey metropolitan area. The first wave of people who registered can be found in last week's Tuesday Trivia (scroll down below). An updated list will be posted here as part of the October 16th Tuesday Trivia, so stay tuned!

Sharing Wisdom

There's a book I've used both in business and ministry titled Sharing Wisdom by Mary Benet McKinney. It's a great tool for anyone who does organization effectiveness work - I highly recommend it.

This Scribblings entry, however, is SO not about the book! It's about spending a couple of hours over lunch earlier this week with Darlene Stover, Jimmy Pic, and Tom Swan ...

They were already at Friday's when I arrived, and I got there in the middle of a hard-pressed recruiting effort by Tom to add two more horns to the Melrose Blackhawks line. "It's just like the Saints - you'll see!" was repeated in various and sundry ways over the course of the next couple of hours. Every once in a great while, I have some pangs of shoulda-coulda when it comes to playing a horn or drum ... not during this lunch! No offense, Bucky ...

It's probably been 25 years - a quarter century - since I last saw the person forever linked with the success of our horn line. In a pattern repeating itself over and over lately, it seemed we were each able to pick up where we left off all those years ago. It was probably the longest amount of time I ever spent chatting with Mr. Swan ... and what fun!

Feel free to validate this with Pic and Darlene: There were probably no less than a few dozen stories Tom started which he cut off at their mid-points, choosing instead to save them for "at the bar, after the reunion." Tales about our successes and failures (self-imposed or at the hands of judges), personalities galore, other experiences - the master weaved his way through them all non-stop.

What's one more thing I need to do before the reunion on the 9th? Run out and pick up a new digital recorder ... I'm not going to miss one word of the wisdom he - or any of you - will be sharing that night!

All for now - corpsdially yours from jo!

Tuesday Trivia / Reunion Edition - October 9, 2007

One month from today! For the next month, Tuesday Trivia will focus on the upcoming reunion.

First, let's close out last week's Trivia Question: What were the names of the buses?

Each vehicle owned by the Saints had a number, and the last three buses were Bus 7, Bus 8, and Bus 9. Of course, it's really the nicknames we were interested in ...

Jackie Bodzas, who submitted the question, remembered the Cage and the Tart bus.

Here's an edited version of how Priscillia French Lyons remembers the buses: I didn't even know any bus other than ours had a name!!! Ours of course was the TART bus and a great bus it was!!! The only other names I knew were the names my father called them and that was "The g** d*** bus" but I don't think that's the name you're looking for.

My memories of the Tart Bus (also known as the Equipment Bus) include our own version of a health club -- the Tart Memorial Recreation Center (TMRC), complete with on-bus sports and diversions. The Cage was known for, among other things, floods (or so I've heard!). There were also two buses over the years known by the very un-original names of The Girls Bus and The Boys Bus.

Now, back to the reunion!

Jimmy Pic, Darlene Stover Dziowgo, and Tommy Swan paid a visit to Ed Gorman at Post 471 yesterday to start the process for menu selection. Once the choices have been made, we'll share those with you. Darlene has also taken some pictures -- expect to see those in the Saints Photo Gallery.

After their meeting in Iselin, I joined the three of them for lunch (you'll have to wait for tomorrow's Scribblings for details on that one!).

Here's a list of the 41 people who will be joining us as of 8:30 am on Wednesday, October 10:

  • Patty Antol
  • Jack Bodzas
  • Dave Brady
  • Linda Burke Andel
  • Carol Burke Boyne
  • Peter Chesnovitz (and Teresa)
  • Rocky Chiocchi (and Kimberly)
  • Peter Crafts (and Kim)
  • Dave DeAndrea
  • Karen DeAndrea Aldiero (and Frank)
  • Danny Dube

Tuesday Trivia - October 2, 2007

Last week, Goober asked you to name all the rooms in the Annex. Here's the "official" answer in clockwise order entering through the front doors on Walsh Avenue:

  • (1) the foyer (area with the telephone)
  • (2) the gym (including the open area at the far end leading to the other exit doors)
  • (3) coat room (used multiple ways over the years, including storage of the pantihose we used to sell)
  • (4) boys bathroom
  • (5) boys bathroom
  • (6) the room that held the equipment used to address the parish collection envelopes (was originally a classroom)
  • (7) the kitchen (used by the drummers)
  • (8) the boiler room (used by the drummers on rare occasions)
  • (9) classroom (used by the horn line originally, then by the drum line)
  • (10) the stage (also was originally used as a classroom)
  • (11) the stage storage room (to the right of the stage on floor level)
  • (12) classroom
  • (13) classroom
  • (14) classroom (yes, there are 3 classrooms on that side!)
  • (15) girls bathroom
  • (16) girls bathroom
  • (17) the left coat room (otherwise known as our equipment room)

In addition, there is a storage area above the equipment room, and the "bingo ledge" (they used to call the bingo numbers from there at one time) above the entry doors. Neither is technically a room, but part of the architecture.

Here were the replies (in the order in which I received them):

  • Priscilla French Lyons:
OK, lets try, As you walk in the entrance, to your right you have the equipment room, then 2 girls bathrooms, around the corner is 2 classrooms that we were never allowed to touch then there was the stage on the other wall (my favorite spot!) then around the next corner is the horn room (or the one horrible memory I have of all the color guard having to go in one by one to try out for drum major into that room) then the next room was the drum room then I think there might be a small kitchen that way the first room used for the drum room then turn the corner and you have 2 boys bathrooms, then the room where we paid dues and kept uniforms the back out the doors???
  • Karen DeAndrea Aldiero
Okay, This is how I remember those rooms...
1st: "side room where drumline paracticed" or "the room where it took me 3 months to play any other note beside low "c"
2nd: "kitchen" or the room where Mr. Wilke taught the mellophones to "tooey ooey oo"
3rd: "girls bathroom" or the place where me, cathy, mary & carol would hide out(practice)
4th " the main room" or the room where Swan would make your knees quake while standing in a pool of your own spit.
lastly: "the holy classroom" which was usually kept locked against the Saints...
    Hoped you liked my versions...

I might not be too good at this anyway seeing as how I still think I went to “Kidneygarden” in the annex. But to name the rooms is a tough one. Over the years I believe we all played in every room in the building. If the door was unlocked that meant that your section could “hang” in there. I even remember the cymbals practicing in the boys bathroom.
Three things were for certain: (I think)
1-the equipment room was the little room to the right of the door as you first walk into the main room.
2- drumline practiced in the kitchen (which is why I am hard of hearing to this day) till the horn line moved out of the big room on the left(last 2 doors).
3-horn line moved to the main room after the CG went somewhere else (other building-different night?)
Thanks to Goober for submitting the question and to Priscilla, Karen, and Jackie, for sharing your Annex memories with us!

Our latest Tuesday Trivia question comes from Jackie Bodzas: What were the names of the buses?

Monday MatchUps - Bottoms Up pt 2

Mondays like this are fun for me -- Tom (Mouse) Noel, Donna (Stratton) Ellis, and Lori Deren found their way home this week! Mouse was featured in our August 20th Monday MatchUps and found out about the site from a co-worker who also was involved in drum corps. Mouse paid it forward by calling Donna Stratton yesterday (Monday MatchUps, July 30th), who has already posted info for the Where Are They Now page out on www.saintsdrumcorps.com. Lori found us through Gary. Welcome Home Lori, Donna, and Mouse!

We're jumping back to the Bottoms-Up approach this week. Using the existing roster, these folks have not made their presence known yet on the site. Just like the last Bottoms-Up, their names are in reverse alphabetical order. If you know how to find them, let me know at joparente.saintsdrumcorps@gmail.com. Thanks!
