Weekend Wonderings: DCI East

Saturday, in the park - I think it was the 32nd of July ...

OK, you all know I can be flexible when it comes to the number of days in a month (xref: Saints Scribblings, March 2009).

ANYWAY, gentle reminder - we're gathering in the park near J Birney Crum Stadium today at 3 pm ... only an hour from Saintsville.

Take 287N to 78W to exit 55 (Cedar Crest Blvd) towards Allentown. Follow S Cedar Crest Blvd for about a mile, and make a right onto Hamilton Blvd (Rt 222N). About 3/4 mile later, you'll see the park (and, probably, a dozen corps going through their warmups). We'll be between the pond and the pool (W Hamilton / Ott). If you get there and need to find us, my cell is (spelling out to avoid the spammers) nine zero eight, two two nine, seven one five four.

It's a beautiful day in the neighborhood, a beautiful day for ... you get it. No excuses that you don't want to go to the show - just don't go to the show!

Note from Jo: The above picture was featured on Maybe 2nd. Since then, the following submission was received ... all I can say it, I didn't write it - the proof is in the salutation (I NEVER call myself Marilyn around corps folks!).

Anyway, here is the validation for my entry a couple of days ago:

In an agreement with Mr Boyle, and I do respect his wishes, I continue to keep his identity and location a secret.

I can reveal this to you: He had been in a witness protection plan for close to thirty years. While in seclusion, he had studied under the world's elite masters of dequisement and had become a world class master in the art himself. After his release, he had been working with European royalty, utilizing his talents of masquerade to allow them access to the public sector, unrecognized.

Mr Boyle has been to all but one of your drum and bugle corps reunion gatherings, in disguise himself of course. For instance:

• If you look closely at the photo gallery reunion entries, why are there people not registered, without nametags (not spouses), who can’t be identified?
• At the Menlo Mall, he was one of the porters (the one drumming the ‘75 first drum solo on top of a trash can).
• Did you notice at the mini-reunion that all of a sudden there were 2 bartenders, and how one of them knew you all so well?
• As mentioned in Saints Scribblings the other day, he did raise his hand to wave in one of the group photos.

In my opinion, his best in-disguise work can be seen in Gallery 10, Page 8, Photo 9 on your corps website, www.saintsdrumcorps.com.

One of the questions that has come up time and time again since the Saints Family has started to reconnect is Where is Pete Boyle? I was even contacted by members of the Etobicoke-Oakland Crusaders to see if we had found him.

Although I'm jumping the gun a few days early (I was asked to not say anything for 18 months), I can now finally share a secret with all of you - Pete was at the mini-reunion on November 9, 2007.

Looking for proof? See that hand in the rear of the photo?

Pete actually called me from the parking lot at the Post that evening, reluctant to come in for reasons I can't share. Since I was getting ready to gather you all together for the group shot, it was a perfect way for Pete to be part of the festivities with no one noticing ... and he ducked back out before anyone else knew he was there.


So, did this really happen? Maybe, Maybe Not ...

New Year's Eve brought some well-placed comments in the Saints Guestbook about the need to reconnect, to get together, to gather our Saints family again.

Then, nothing.

What's it worth to you?

We were, are, and will continue to be a wonderful resource for each other. We're there to help each other, laugh with each other, cry with each other, beat up on each other when needed. With all the doom and gloom around us these days, getting the ball rolling again to gather - however informally - can be a lifeline for so many.

If we've learned anything these past couple of years, it's that life is short. Don't just think about it. Do something about it.

After all, that's what family does.

Buses, Jackets, and Whatnot

Judy Stewart, I saw your son on Saturday!

Well, that's a bit of an exaggeration. I saw your son's bus.

I was headed to Lancaster PA for my business partner's birthday celebration (don't worry, Gerry, I won't tell anyone you now carry a Medicare card!). Heading south on Rt 222, I noticed a bus heading north, and a second, and a third, and a truck ... Crossmen. They were on their way, I guess, to DCI East. The thing that was comical is that when I saw the first bus, I thought I was imagining things when I saw their logo.

See, even after all these years, I STILL look at buses as they pass by, or try to read the backs of jackets, to see if there's a corps name there somewhere. I was just surprised that all those years of giving myself whiplash paid off for once!

I'll be watching for Troopers while in Wyoming this week and next ... I'll let you know how I did when I get back.

Weekend Wonderings: A Week Later

What is it about what we had together that prompts - even compels - us to reconnect?

Our time marching with the Saints, for many of us, represented our only corps membership experience. Some enriched our ranks having marched other places, and others moved on to other corps (either junior or senior) after leaving.

And then, there's the story about the guy from Blessed Sac who was convinced he'd make our mellophone line as a walk-on ...

I digress.

There's something about our shared experiences as Saints that, 41 years after we started and 31 years after we last fielded a corps, still pulls us together in ways corps today just don't. It even evokes an incredibly deep Guest Book posting from the person who's arguably the instructor most closely identified with our summer successes.

Whatever it is, I'm glad for what it is, and I'm glad you continue to stop by Scribblings for a visit. I'm as excited to see how many of you pop in to check out what's going on here as you might be when there's a new posting.

Thanks for being part of my family. See you at the next Reunion, if not before.

Weekend Wonderings: The Morning After ...

Man, oh, man, where to begin?

Just some disconnected ramblings for today ...

First, some shout-outs ... the Reunion Committee (what a crew you all are!), Mike the Caterer at Sewaren (not to be confused with Warren) Park, our ever-supportive family at Post 471 (extra thanks for bailing us out on the need for ice at the picnic!), and on a personal note, to Leslie and the staff at Somerset Medical Center for sewing me back together in time to see all of you yesterday.

Sometime over the next couple of days, I'll compile a list of everyone who joined us over the weekend. For now, I just wanted to make sure I had something out here for all of you to read (especially you, Mickey, when you get back to work on Monday!).

Someone asked me last evening what could be done to pay back the Reunion Committee in some way for all the work that was done - if I wasn't clear about it then, I will be now: HELP PLAN THE NEXT ONE.

Finally, a bit on legacy passed down from one generation to the next ... we had the privilege to honor Ray "Mr. C" Chmieleski, Uncle Tony Fastuca, and Alvina "Mrs. Chez" Chesnovitz last evening for their "actions (which) served to foster a corps family which still enjoys, over 40 years later, the days when the Saints came marching in." Among the many lessons they and all the other supporting parents shared, we learned generosity of spirit.

To those of you who kicked in some extra cash to make it possible for others to join us, as well as helping out one of our Saints siblings who lost everything in a fire last week, I am humbled by your actions. You challenge each of us to do more, living out our mantra in being Saints for one another, even 40 years later, because that's what family does ...

Tuesday Trivia: Each One, Invite One

Today's Tuesday Trivia has a bit different slant than those in the past ...

I'm asking for your help. At this point, our Reunion Registrations have stalled a bit. I know many of you check in here daily (or more often!) to see who will be joining us on July 19th. Truth is, no one new has registered since the last update to the June 3rd posting.

There are MANY people out there who just haven't gotten around to registering yet (Karen, are you listening???). We're planning on sending a reminder e-mail to our full mailing list very soon, so that will help a bit.

In the meantime, take a visit to the Contact page on www.saintsdrumcorps.com. Be a Saint - scroll through the 100+ e-mails that are posted, and pick one or two names to contact yourself. A simple e-mail will work - or choose your method if you know the person well.

Weekend Wonderings: Blue and Gold Pages, and some other stuff

This is an idea that Rocky and I tossed around over a year ago ... for a couple of different reasons, it's popped up in my head again this morning.

How often have you struggled with finding the right person to do some work for you? From landscaping to a Chief Financial Officer, picking the best from many (sometimes hundreds) of possibilities can be daunting.

How often have you struggled in letting folks know you're looking for work? From landscaping to a CFO, getting the word out there that you're looking for a gig (or a full-time job) can be daunting.

That's where the Blue and Gold Pages would come in ...

Think of it as a two-way Yellow Pages for those of us who marched in the Saints: If you have something to offer (products, services, or yourself for a job), you list your business (or yourself!). If you're looking for a product, a service, or someone to hire, you post your need. In either case, you can check out what's available, or what people are looking for.

Look at it this way - there's little to hide since we all knew each other back when, umm ... well, you fill in the blank! We also know what we've become, and the great potential that comes from working together.

Thursday Thinkings: What's In a Name?

First, reunion updates are included in the June 3rd posting - after a few quiet days, we've added a couple more folks.

Now, to today's entry ...

Craig "The Clav" Stephens has found us - welcome home Craig!

His e-mails to me, and postings out in the Guest Book (www.saintsdrumcorps.com) by him and others, reminded me yet again how more than a few of us have never lost those names we picked up back in the day.

Some have tried hard to let go of the names from our time marching with the Saints, only to have people say to you that they never knew what your name really was. I still get that, as well, or the reverse ("So, why do they call you JoAnne?").

For as strange as this might sound (or then again, maybe not), I really feel much more like a JoAnne than a Marilyn ... 'nuff said on that!

In the meantime, I hope to compile a list of ALL the nicknames from when we marched in time for the reunion. I'll need your help, though - send your lists to joparente.saintsdrumcorps@gmail.com. Thanks in advance!

Time Flies, in More Ways than One

Just some quick thoughts on current events ...

I spent a couple of minutes earlier today, at my PC, watching an astronaut doing mechanical work on the outside of the International Space Station while whirling around the world at about a zillion miles an hour (OK, I finally admit it - even though I'm married to a retired science teacher, I never took Physics. The secret is out). Something about the moment brought me back to my teens, and I actually started to laugh out loud.

My mind had wandered back to the day in July 1969 when Neil Armstrong took his first steps on the moon. I can still remember sitting with my sibs (Karen among them) and my parents in the living room of the Big Yellow House in Fords, watching the black and white telecast of poorer quality than is available on most cell phones these days, and breaking out in hives over the excitement of the moment.

That was almost 39 years ago.

I had already been a Saint for two years at that point in my life.

So much has evolved since then from a technology perspective, a cultural perspective, a world perspective.

What hasn't changed is that I still haven't disconnected from that time in my life when I marched side-by-side with all of you.

Can't wait to see you all in July, and not to celebrate the Moon Walk, either.

Weekend Wonderings: Reunion Registration Time!

It continues to amaze me how we're still all connecting some 41 years after the first night many of us gathered in the OLP Cafeteria to join the parish drum corps ...

The Survey Monkey link for this summer's reunion has barely made it to everyone's e-mail boxes, and we already have a pile of folks (from inside and beyond the Saints greater metropolitan area) who have registered. Some are coming for part of the day, others are spending the whole day with us, and many are bringing family members to at least one of the day's events.

Way cool if you ask me!

We'll be back to the Monday MatchUps, Reunion Edition on May 26th. When you consider how many bus trips and parades we shared together for Memorial Day weekends over the years, it fits somehow.

Two Months and Counting!

Let's start the countdown for the summer reunion!

Today marks the two month mark until the Saints Summer Reunion 2008. In case you missed the e-mail and haven't been out on the home page at www.saintsdrumcorps.com, the festivities are slated for July 19, 2008.

The day will start with a picnic at Sewaren Park and is open to Saints, Saints families, and friends of Saints of all ages. Later in the evening, the adults are invited to gather at Post 471 in Iselin, the home for our mini reunion last November.

You can register for just the picnic, just the dinner, or both (with a $5 discount).
