Maybe 4: Where in the World is Pete Boyle? Part 2

Maybe 4th - Where in the World is Pete Boyle? Part 2
by ???

(Editor's note: Let's see how long we can make the month of May last - send in your entries for Maybe, Maybe Not!)

(picture found in Saints Photo Gallery 11, Page 2, Row 3, Picture 1)

Note from Jo: The above picture was featured on Maybe 2nd. Since then, the following submission was received ... all I can say it, I didn't write it - the proof is in the salutation (I NEVER call myself Marilyn around corps folks!).

Anyway, here is the validation for my entry a couple of days ago:

Marilyn,

In an agreement with Mr Boyle, and I do respect his wishes, I continue to keep his identity and location a secret.

I can reveal this to you: He had been in a witness protection plan for close to thirty years. While in seclusion, he had studied under the world's elite masters of dequisement and had become a world class master in the art himself. After his release, he had been working with European royalty, utilizing his talents of masquerade to allow them access to the public sector, unrecognized.

Mr Boyle has been to all but one of your drum and bugle corps reunion gatherings, in disguise himself of course. For instance:
  • If you look closely at the photo gallery reunion entries, why are there people not registered, without nametags (not spouses), who can’t be identified?
  • At the Menlo Mall, he was one of the porters (the one drumming the ‘75 first drum solo on top of a trash can).
  • Did you notice at the mini-reunion that all of a sudden there were 2 bartenders, and how one of them knew you all so well?
  • As mentioned in Saints Scribblings the other day, he did raise his hand to wave in one of the group photos.

In my opinion, his best in-disguise work can be seen in Gallery 10, Page 8, Photo 9 on your corps website, www.saintsdrumcorps.com.

Signed,

Anonymous

Maybe 2: Where in the World is Pete Boyle?

Maybe 2nd - Where in the World is Pete Boyle?
by JoAnne Parente

(Editor's note: Let's see how long we can make the month of May last - send in your entries for Maybe, Maybe Not!)

(picture found in Saints Photo Gallery 11, Page 2, Row 3, Picture 1)

One of the questions that has come up time and time again since the Saints Family has started to reconnect is Where is Pete Boyle? I was even contacted by members of the Etobicoke-Oakland Crusaders to see if we had found him.

Although I'm jumping the gun a few days early (I was asked to not say anything for 18 months), I can now finally share a secret with all of you - Pete was at the mini-reunion on November 9, 2007.

Looking for proof? See that hand in the rear of the photo?

Pete actually called me from the parking lot at the Post that evening, reluctant to come in for reasons I can't share. Since I was getting ready to gather you all together for the group shot, it was a perfect way for Pete to be part of the festivities with no one noticing ... and he ducked back out before anyone else knew he was there.

So, did this really happen? Maybe, Maybe Not ...

March Moments 2009: March 41 - Present Tense, Chapter 1

March 40 - Present Tense, Chapter 1
by Pete Crafts

(Editor's note: March doesn't end until we all decide it does - the ultimate antithesis of aging out. As long as entries for March Moments keep coming in, March keeps going, too.)

There were many highlights on Kim's and my vacation to Central Florida this past March I would like to tell about.

  • We rode Harleys with Kenny Chiocchi Saturday,Thursday, and Saturday again.
  • Met up with Sue Palasak on Main Street Daytona.
  • We had dinner Wednesday night with Kim Mega Trimblett ,Jim Trimblett, Laura and Alex their children, Chris Trimblett, and my Aunt Carolyn. Kim was a wonderful hostess.
  • We spent Saturday night and Sunday with Jimmy and family at the shore in Ponce Inlet.

Backing up to Friday night we saw The Payne Brothers. Chris went out of his way to get some lights set up in the club so I could play with a few lights that night. His band was just awesome that night. Molly Hatchet's drummer showed up with a few ladies in tow and played a whole set with The Payne Brothers. We had a great time, took some photos, and said our sad goodbyes with hugs.

Well the next day, Kenny came by and we rode to The Cabbage Patch Bar where they were having biker festivities. Well, we weren't that keen on watching women wrestle in shredded up cabbage in the hot Florida sun, so somehow I convinced Kim and Kenny to go down to JB's Fishcamp (which is where The Creature of The Black Lagoon was filmed) to see Chris play at 3pm. We pulled up and I waved to Chris up on the stage behind his keyboards. The surprised look on his face was that super smile I had not seen for 30 years ... Then I pointed to Kenny on his Harley and Chris came running down to us from that stage, hugging Kenny and not believing we came back for more.

We had some super highlights on our trip and I owe it all to some folks here who spent a lot of their time bringing us Saints closer together ... You know who you are and thanks again.

Peter and Kim Crafts

March Moments 2009: March 35 - Memories from 1974, Chapter 3

March 35 - Memories from 1974, Chapter 3
by Jack Bodzas

(Editor's note: March doesn't end until we all decide it does - the ultimate antithesis of aging out. As long as entries for March Moments keep coming in, March keeps going, too.)

On the way to the ’74 World Open one of our buses or trucks broke down, believe it or not! I gotta think our drivers spent as much time under the vehicles as they did driving.

Of course, kids being kids, multiplied by being cooped up in a sweaty smelly ole bus for a bunch of hours singing many, many verses of Barnacle Bill the Sailor,
or Shaving Cream, or 100 Bottles of Beer on the Wall or ... oh never mind, you get the picture ...

The first thing we did after we jumped out the back door was to start up a roadside football game.

The second thing I did was to trip over a hole and ram into someone - I think it was Pete (where oh where are you now) Boyle who was very much like running into a refrigerator with a head. He just did not budge, not one itty bitty bit.

The third was this incredibly loud snap I heard, coming directly from my right ankle area.

The next thing I knew I was in some hospital getting a cast put on by a man wearing a BoSox hat.

Within days I was back on the field marching - cast, tympani, uniform and all, unlike today’s modern timpanists who have their drums carried onto the field for them, and sit down to play.

Ah ... the good old days.

Jack

March Moments 2009: March 29 - Memories from 1976, Chapter 2

March 29 - Memories from 1976, Chapter 2
by Mary Cassidy Ryan

1976 - a great year! And, always have a Plan B.

One of my best thoughts was our stop at the University of Wisconsin, Whitewater. What a difference it made to be off the gym floors and in actual beds! I recall that the practice field was great as well as the laundry room (luxury items when on the tour)! My roommate was Diane Markowitz (hope spelling is right). I would love to hear from her!

When the season concluded in Wildwood, it taught me how important it is to have a "Plan B" in place. Although I practiced with you all over and over, I had limited time with Duke E's Jitterbug+++. When called upon to do it alone in Wildwood, I really messed up! My right arm went into denial. I did a poor job! With much thanks to all of you, the performance was great! Afterwards, Mr. Kadash picked me up and you all applauded! I recall putting my shako over my face, wishing I did a better job! Thanks!

Last summer I moved back to San Antonio, Texas, after a one year venture to Louisiana. Our city will host the DCI southwest regional contest on July 18th. If you plan a visit anytime, let me know, I would love to hear from you. Cell: 210-632-3848 email mmc_ryan @att.net.

Monday MatchUps: Presidents Day 2009

A strange thought occurred to me just now.

I don't think we have anyone who chose politics as their full-time (or even part-time) career post-Saints.

We certainly have our mix of professions out there, some of which are more interesting (?) than others - and yes, Pete Crafts and Mouse, I'm talking about you (fireworks to WDW - what were you thinking???).

Still, with everything everyone has shared, I don't remember any mayors, or council people, or representatives.

Wonder why that is?

All for now - corpsdially yours from jo!

Wednesday Workouts: Linking with each other and LinkedIn

Let's see how much interest this deviation to Saints Scribblings can drum up (pun intended).

Wednesdays, from time to time, will be about work. I'm still open to Guest Writer Wednesdays, but I've had no recent offers from any of you.

The world is a crazy place these days, and not because some of us are still recovering from the transgressions of our youth (and you know who you are!). Some of us are doing OK job-wise, even with the economy crashing around us. Some are hanging on by a thread, almost dreading going into work every day for fear of impending layoffs. Some are already looking for a new gig, and maybe even in a new profession.

Most of our connections with each other have been about relationships we planted over thirty years ago. In many cases, we really haven't connected dots to what we do these days. Sure, we've shared info about where we live, main squeezes, and children. Personally, I know I've discussed what I do these days with only a handful of you. I venture to guess that it's the same for you.

It's time to open the doors to whatever connections we can make with each other.

Today's question: Are you LinkedIn? I am
(gentle reminder - my real first name is Marilyn), and I created the Saints Alumni Association group this evening. Let me know if you're out there, and let's build some networks.

All for now - corpsdially yours from jo!

Monday MatchUps: Who are you looking for?

Before I dust off the missing-in-action members list again, I'm opening up the floor (well, blog, but I'm sure you get it).

Who have you been looking for from the Saints?

Click here to send your response. Let me know if you want your name included in the posting or not (if you don't specify, your name will be included).

All for now - corpsdially yours from jo!

Monday, December 15, 2008

Yes, it's been awhile ... and I have a request ...

First, on the last Trivia - the short answer is yes, it was Legionnaires Disease (thanks to all who responded). Just an hour after I made the post, things got a bit crazy with family illnesses, and then, there was an actual outbreak of Legionnaires at St Peter's Hospital in New Brunswick.

Enough of my excuses.

Now, here's what has brought me back to Scribblings ... I received this note yesterday in my Inbox:

Hi Jo,

I am not sure if I am contacting the right person, but I wanted to inform you that my mother Doreen Derlak (Lang) passed away on May 31, 2008 from Cancer. I just wanted to update you.

I know that the drum corps were a very important part of her life. I hate to ask this, but do you know if there are any pictures of her on the website? I would love to see them. OR do you happen to know of anyone that would have any?

Thank you
Jenifer Mahoney

Jenifer's contact information will be posted on the site, but in the meantime, here's the challenge. I KNOW that the loyal Scribblings readers are just looking for some reason / excuse to spend time out on the site, and here it is. I promised Jenifer that I would ask you all to go on a Scavenger Hunt for her, searching our photo galleries on www.saintsdrumcorps.com (and private photo collections you may not have sent in for Rocky to post) for pictures of Doreen.

As you find them, go ahead and post your discoveries out in the Guest Book. Make sure you're as specific as you can be by including the Gallery Number, Page Number, Row, photo number for that row, and which person is Doreen. For example, if I were identifying a picture of Dawn Fair, recent 50th Birthday celebrante, here's how it would go - Gallery 2, Page 1, Row 1, Picture 5, person on the right.

While we're at it, let's identify pictures of Mr. and Mrs. Derlak as well ...

This would be a great Christmas present and tribute to Doreen - I'll reward you with the 12 Days of Christmas, Saints-Style, that I never finished posting last year. Promise.

Tuesday Trivia: Each One, Invite One

Today's Tuesday Trivia has a bit different slant than those in the past ...

I'm asking for your help. At this point, our Reunion Registrations have stalled a bit. I know many of you check in here daily (or more often!) to see who will be joining us on July 19th. Truth is, no one new has registered since the last update to the June 3rd posting.

There are MANY people out there who just haven't gotten around to registering yet (Karen, are you listening???). We're planning on sending a reminder e-mail to our full mailing list very soon, so that will help a bit.

In the meantime, take a visit to the Contact page on www.saintsdrumcorps.com. Be a Saint - scroll through the 100+ e-mails that are posted, and pick one or two names to contact yourself. A simple e-mail will work - or choose your method if you know the person well.

Me? I'm calling Karen as soon as I'm done posting this, and sending some e-mails myself.

All for now - corpsdially yours from jo!

Thursday Thinkings: What's In a Name?

First, reunion updates are included in the June 3rd posting - after a few quiet days, we've added a couple more folks.

Now, to today's entry ...

Craig "The Clav" Stephens has found us - welcome home Craig!

His e-mails to me, and postings out in the Guest Book (www.saintsdrumcorps.com) by him and others, reminded me yet again how more than a few of us have never lost those names we picked up back in the day.

Some have tried hard to let go of the names from our time marching with the Saints, only to have people say to you that they never knew what your name really was. I still get that, as well, or the reverse ("So, why do they call you JoAnne?").

For as strange as this might sound (or then again, maybe not), I really feel much more like a JoAnne than a Marilyn ... 'nuff said on that!

In the meantime, I hope to compile a list of ALL the nicknames from when we marched in time for the reunion. I'll need your help, though - send your lists to joparente.saintsdrumcorps@gmail.com. Thanks in advance!

All for now - corpsdially yours from jo!

Guest Writer Wednesday: Jackie Bodzas on Saints Stuff

Yes, I realize this is being posted on a Tuesday and I've called it Guest Writer Wednesday ... you've all waited long enough for a new posting out here in Saints Scribblings, and I wasn't going to make you wait one minute longer. If Macy's can have their one day sales on Wednesday with a preview day on Tuesday, then so can we.

Enjoy this contribution from Jackie!

All for now - corpsdially yours from jo!

Hello Saints!

I sit here with pen in hand, actually with keypad under fingers as the case may be, ghost writer for Marilyn/Jo (whatever the witness protection plan calls her these days). She has a lot going on, and will be back to us as soon as alien forces release her. Please read on.

To the Instructors, Parents, Friends of, and of course to the Saints I have marched with, I want thank you for being part of what I call a better than decent, bordering on … a wonderful childhood!

I pretty much check in to the Saints website every day; I find comfort in looking at our old pictures: the satin shirts, the cadet and yes even the orange, black and white uniforms. I look forward to current pictures posted (it is always refreshing to see the poor little fishes that Crafts has freed from their homes in the sea), reading the banter in the Guestbook, to see where some of us have gotten ourselves in the Where Are They Now section and other tabs I may happen to plunk down on.

The other day, when killing time waiting for one of my offspring (who was off at a cello gig - far, far from any kind of drum corps practice), I for some reason found myself counting stuff on the Member Roster link. I had a stupendous revelations – only 11 of us marched with the Saints from beginning to end (first parade to the last show). I really thought it was going to be a number closer to 60 or 100 when you look at how close we seem when we gather at our little reunions. In this statistic, I have included Goober (I mean Alan) by default because he was always there, Jo and Althea for becoming staff and staying with us to the end, and Wargo simply because he is Wargo.

You might have been just coming in as I was going out, so I might not remember all of you, or you me. As always there was the little kid / big kid thing going on. For instance, Rocky was just Ragu’s little brother / my little brother if someone outside of the corps even thought of picking on him. But just the same, I have marched with ALL of you – anyone who had the honor of putting on a Saints uniform during our too-short ten years together.

Again, I thank you all for being part of a really better than great experience!

Three thoughts:

  • I wouldn’t mind our next reunion being that we just hang out in some park somewhere like we always used to.
  • Just where in the world is Peter Boyle anyway …
  • My most sincere “Thanks” to Mr. Ray Chmieleski and a whole bunch of his friends for getting us started, and to those who kept us going.
Take care,

Jack Bodzas – Drum Line ‘67-‘77

Tuesday Trivia / Reunion Wrapup - November 13, 2007

Here are a few questions to ponder (I was going to say they were rhetorical, but I've been accused of using too many big words lately!):
  • When did you finally STOP smiling after the reunion?
  • What was the best part of the night?
  • How many people did you get a chance to talk to, and how many did you miss because the evening ended much too quickly?
  • Who sped up the clocks on Friday?
  • Is there a way to bottle up all those great feelings and keep them with us to be opened during the rough times?

For me, the grin has been on my face most of the time since Friday afternoon. Now that I've handed over my pictures to Rocky, I just have a couple of leftover reunion things to wrap up before I start scanning in all the pictures and articles I've been given lately.

Before Friday, I THOUGHT I knew what some of the things were that I missed the most about my marching days. I was wrong. What I really missed, besides all of you, was how much we laughed when we were together.

When you think back, we really did have incredible amounts of fun squeezed in between rehearsals, parades, competitions, and tag days. As I've told several of you since Friday, I've gotten more aerobic exercise from all the laughing this weekend than I've gotten from working out this entire year (for those of you who saw me, this is probably not a great surprise!).

Here are some things the mini-reunion confirmed from a planning perspective:

  • The next one HAS to last for a couple of days. Four hours really wasn't long enough - and that was with about 90 people present.
  • We have to pick a date and place before the year is out. This is critical for those of you who need to plan relatively far in advance to work out family and job logistics.
  • We need more PROACTIVE participants on the Reunion Planning Committee. 'Nuff said on that for now.
  • We don't need anything fancy to keep us happy. We just need places that will do the heavy lifting for us (like setup, food, and cleanup) so we can all spend our time together just being together.
  • It's time to place more focus on really finding Pete Boyle and all the other members of the Saints family with whom we haven't yet connected.

Thanks to those of you who were part of the reunion in any way, even those who sent along best wishes to be shared with those present (yes, your messages were read at the reunion!). If you were there and took pictures, make sure to send them along to Rocky. There are lots of new photos in Gallery 11 on www.saintsdrumcorps.com right now, so check it out!

It was great seeing you all - already looking forward to the next one!

Monday Matchups - There At The End

Our first Monday MatchUps was posted on June 18, 2007, and here we are with our 18th edition, at the end of the roster as currently compiled. Next week's Monday MatchUps will be pre-empted with news from the mini-reunion.

If you're asking yourself, What reunion?, this is clearly your first contact with Saints Scribblings. If you're interested in attending and still haven't registered to attend the festivities at Post 471 in Iselin on November 9th, check out the home page on www.saintsdrumcorps.com. As long as you make all sorts of outrageous promises to Althea to pay for your dinner, you can still sign up.

We have some happy news to report: Bob Schwartz (Monday MatchUps, July 9) and Aaron Zolnowski (Monday MatchUps, August 6) have found us! Better yet, they both plan on attending the mini-reunion ... welcome home Aaron and Bob!

Back to the MatchUps!

Counting today's entries, there have been 217 members mentioned over the five+ months this blog has run. We've connected to 16, and sadly, learned of the passing of one of the members we listed.

Each of the members below were with us in the last year we competed - 1977. If you know how to reach them (or anyone else mentioned in previous Monday MatchUps), please contact me at joparente.saintsdrumcorps@gmail.com. Thanks!
  • Al Hankerson
  • Cathy Kadash
  • David Kolczynski
  • Laura Labassi
  • David LaBerge
  • Dave Leach
  • Jimmy Mack
  • Jay Marzella
  • Lisa Peterson

Hope you've enjoyed this journey through the roster with me ...
