Tuesday Trivia: July 7, 2009

We had two members respond to last week's Tuesday Trivia - here it goes:

What corps used horns from the disbanded Saints in their DCI Championships alumni performance?

From Jimmy Pic:
27th Lancers - Foxboro MA, 1994

From Jackie Bodzas:

No one, they went right to the Smithsonian.

We have a winner!

As Pic correctly pointed out, 2-7 used our horns at the 1994 DCI championships. Want proof? Check this out - around the 5 minute marker if you don't have time to watch the whole video:
http://video.google.com/videoplay?docid=5877723053704824367
(27th Lancers - Once More in '94)

Now, for next week's question:
Name the first roster of instructors for the Saints.

Remember ... prizes, prizes, we have no prizes!

Tuesday Trivia: June 30, 2009

We had two members respond to last week's Tuesday Trivia - double the response of the week before!

Here's last week's two-part question:
How many NJ AL championships did the Saints win, and in what years?

From Pete Chez:
Jo, If I remember correctly (and maybe I'm not - the 70s were a lot of fun you know), you could either compete in the show OR the parade. So my guess is '69. Purely a guess. If I'm way off base, DON"T PRINT THIS !!!! thanks.

From Jackie Bodzas:
To answer your question: 26 World Series championships and 39 American League pennants. Ooops ... I think that is the Yanks, not us.

And now, for the official answer:
I have no clue. I had forgotten about the either-or stipulation - thanks to Pete for the reminder, and to Jackie for confirmation. As far as how many and what years, the only one I can remember for sure is the guard field championship we won in 1973 (see the picture from the balcony at the Cara Mara below). We may also have won the guard title in 1972, but can't really say for sure. I seem to remember at least one parade win (could be the 1969 thing that Pete remembers), and I thought the corps won the field show once as well (1976?).

Thanks to my little brothers for responding!

Now, for next week's question (and I DO know the answer to this one!):
What corps used horns from the disbanded Saints in their DCI Championships alumni performance
?

Remember ... prizes, prizes, we have no prizes!

Tuesday Trivia: Legions

Looks like Tuesday Trivia is also starting to bottom out ... only one person responded ...

Here's was last week's two-part question:
What is Lisa's last name, and who is she related to in the Saints?

Here's what Jackie Bodzas sent in (two separate submissions):

Hmmm ... she looks like a nice enough girl (except for the orange jacket, but that is my personal demon to deal with).

  • She could be Pete’s sister in law
  • She could be Bucky’s great, great-granddaughter
  • She could be one of Goober's kids
  • She could be my long lost sister
  • She could be Stoney’s second or third wife
  • Would you believe Peter Boyle's daughter?
  • Oh wait, I know exactly who she is related to ... Jo - it is your third cousin; Floyd on your father’s side who had a nephew by marriage whose wife had three sisters: Betty, Bonnie and Beatrice. Bonnie had four children, the third's name was Samuel who had six kids by his fourth marriage, the youngest which had two girls - twins each named Lisa (because she couldn’t decide which child to name Lisa). Lisa (the younger) had three kids named Lisa, Lisa, and Lisa. This is the middle child: Lisa Parente!

Well, Jackie did correctly guess that I do, indeed, have a cousin Lisa Parente - she's a SECOND cousin (daughter of Greg, who's the son of Greg, and who has a son Greg and a grandson Greg) ... but it's not that Lisa.

As far as the orange jacket goes - that was the inspiration for the Trivia question.

The real answers are - Lisa isn't related to ANYONE from the Saints, and her full name is Lisa Marie (Venezia) Lawrence. She's a member of the 2009 NJ American Legion State Champion Melrose Blackhawks, and is part of the all-girl mello line. She stopped by the mini-reunion for a bit on the way back from Wildwood.

Now, for this week's two-part question:
How many NJ AL championships did the Saints win, and in what years?

Remember ... prizes, prizes, we have no prizes!

Tuesday Trivia: Guess Who!

Well, Maybe, Maybe Not turned into more of a Definitely Not.

Back to Tuesday Trivia!

Lisa (pictured below) was with us at the gathering at Pete and Kim Crafts' home on Sunday.

Here's the two-part question:
What is Lisa's last name, and who is she related to in the Saints?

Tuesday Trivia: Saints Winter Guard Show

Here's last week's question:

The summer show that we held was called Music In Splendor. What did we call the winter guard show we sponsored each year?

Bonus points: It was held the same weekend every year. What weekend was that?

First, the bonus points - no one got this part right. The show was held the second Saturday of March each year. Lots of good guesses, though!

Now, to the first part - the show was called Flying Silks. As rightly pointed out by Jackie Bodzas, the name for the show was coined by my all-time favorite boss, Jean French. Also chiming in with the right answer were Jimmy Pic and Pete Chez (who claimed to be too young to remember the weekend we held it ... hmmm).

Thanks to you all!

Given that the postings for this month are now dedicated to our favorite marching moments, Tuesday Trivia will be put on hold until April.

Tuesday Trivia: An Easy One (I think!)

Here goes with an easy one in parts ... if there aren't responses to this one, I quit.

Tuesday Trivia: Wildwood Motels

So, what were the places in Wildwood where we stayed?

The answer was out on www.saintsdrumcorps.com for all to find, on page 9 of the 1980 Reunion booklet:
  • Cara Mara
  • El Coronado
  • Forget-Me-Not (breakfasts only)
  • Lollipop Motel
  • Mauna Loa
  • Rio Motel
  • Saratoga Inn
Given that there's been little interest in Trivia lately, I'll be taking a break on it for awhile. Start submitting some more general interest Trivia questions, and we'll resurrect it.

Tuesday Trivia: Wildwood Motels

Yeah, yeah, yeah - I know I'm posting this on Wednesday. Live with it.

First, on last week's Trivia - no additional submissions were received by e-mail about instructors and their corps, so we'll retire that question for the time being. A hint on a BIG omission - can anyone say Dukes?

Now, to this week. Kim Mega Trimblett made the following posting in the Saints Guest Book a few days ago: I was looking at news online and came across the "Filthiest Hotels in America" and #4 was the Eden Roc in Wildwood. Wasn't that one of the ones we used to stay at?

Here's the question: What were the places in Wildwood where we stayed?

Tuesday Trivia: More of Pre-Corps, Post-Corps and all-round Corps

Here are the answers - or better put, responses - to last week's question:

What senior corps did some of our instructors march in,
and for bonus points, what junior corps did they march with?

Jackie Bodzas (supplier of the question): Mr Lopez / Cabs – Bucky / Sky
Pete Chez: I'm 90 percent sure Swan started with Saint Kevins out of Newark.
Chris Morosoff: Hmmmmmmmm, just a guess? Bucky Swan - Skyliners
And the, Judy Stewart Sgammato: With a little searching, I found the marching experiences, both Junior and Senior of the following Saints instructors:

  • Joe Aiello: SR-Bucs
  • Ray Cappicilli: JR-Holy Name Cadets; SR-Cabs
  • Tony Cataneo: SR-Sunrisers
  • Rose Cataneo: SR-Sunrisers and Cabs
  • Jimmy D'Amico: JR-Holy Name Cadets; St. Josephs Cadets. SR-Cabs and Sky
  • Frank Kubinak: JR-Rossville PAL. SR-Sky and Cabs
  • George Lopez: SR-Cabs
  • Mike Lorenzo: SR-Bucs
  • JoAnne Parente: JR-Saints
  • Bob Peterson: JR-St. George Cadets and Holy Name Cadets. SR-Cabs
  • Tom Swan: JR-St Joseph Cadets of Newark. SR-Sky
  • John Tokar: JR-Garfield Cadets
  • George Tuthill: JR-St Ann's Cadets and Fairlawn Police Cadets. SR-Cabs
  • Judy Walck: JR-Garfield Cadets
  • Gus Wilke: JR-Jersey City Department of Recreation and Fisk Post VFW corps; St. Joes of Union City; Cusik Post 15, West New York, NJ; Our Lady of Grace, Hoboken. SR-Sky
  • Bruce Zolnowski: JR-Saints
There are still more instructors out there not accounted for, like Ralph Fair, Walter Kelly, and Sonny Cataneo to name a few.

We'll keep the question going for another week.

Tuesday Trivia: Pre-Corps, Post-Corps, and all-round Corps

Four members responded to last week's question ... thanks!

Pete Crafts: Pete came to the Saints from the Silver Lancers (Middlesex NJ). Pete made the trek south on 287 to join us along with fellow Lancers Jimmy Pic, Marty Straka, Darlene Stover, Alfie Hankerson, and Lorraine Porowski (Lorraine, we're still looking to connect with you!). While Pete did some roadie stuff with rock bands post-Saints, he didn't march again.

Judy Stewart Sgammato: The Saints was Judy's first corps, but definitely not her last. She headed north to march with the Garfield Cadets and Bushwackers, and eventually served on the Board and as a Business Manager for DCA Corps Carolina Gold. These days, she considers herself a proud Crossmen parent.

Pete Chez: While late with his response, it still is notable. The Saints was also his first drum corps (he claims to only have been 8 years old at the time, yet he carries on like he's older than me these days ... I digress). After 1977, he joined the Marines Corps (yes, Pete, I'll also count it towards marching!). Starting in 1982, he marched with Reading Bucs with both Mickey and Goober (the last time the Chez brothers marched together). He currently plays with Melrose Blackhawks with a bunch of other Saints, and also appears as a guest lead baritone for Brooklyn United, Lambertville Volunteers, and St Lucy's Cadets Alumni Corps.

Jackie Bodzas: Here's his response, intact:

The Saints was my first and last drum corps.
Blue and Gold satin to wool cadet to orange and black polyester. Hmmm.

First day to last, Stout Hearted Men to Send in the Clowns.
First Fords parade to our last gig in Wildwood,
with a gazillion shows in between.

Ludwig to Ludwig.

I could sit here and name first and last instructors / directors.
It sure is a boatload or busload, as the case may be,
of simply fantastic people.

Started out too young and ended up too old.

Thought about Senior corps, kept putting it off:
College / rock band / more college / bluegrass band x6 /
more college / wife / demanding career / 1st kid / new job/

2nd kid / world golf tour (just kidding) /
little league coaching and so it goes ...

Thought about Senior corps, kept putting it off.
If there was a Saints Sr Corps, my heart my have been more in it.
In other words, I would have joined in a second!

And now for Jackie's Trivia questions:
What senior corps did some of our instructors march in,
and for bonus points, what junior corps did they march with?

Tuesday Trivia: From Where, To Where

As a warm-up to some new Trivia questions submitted during the Christmas break, here's an easy one:

What corps did you march with pre-Saints? How about after?

This is more data mining that real trivia, truth be told. I could start the list, but because I never marched before or after my blue-n-gold years, it just didn't seem right for me to be telling your stories ...

So, how about it? Click here to respond.

Thanks!

Tuesday Trivia: 1976 DCIs

So, for this week at least, Tuesday Trivia is back!

I was going through some of my leftover vacation change earlier, and I came across a Bicentennial Quarter (remember them?).

Here's the question: Besides the Bicentennial, what was the big thing going on in Philadelphia while we were marching in DCIs (
August 1976)?

Hint: If memory serves, it was SO big a deal that some of the parents didn't want their kids to march.

Since we're not using the e-mail account for reunion planning right now, send your guesses by Monday, August 25th to saintsreunion@gmail.com. Remember ... prizes, prizes, we have no prizes!

PS - As always, suggestions for future Tuesday Trivia questions are appreciated. Send them along with your answer to this week's question!

Tuesday Trivia: Each One, Invite One

Today's Tuesday Trivia has a bit different slant than those in the past ...

I'm asking for your help. At this point, our Reunion Registrations have stalled a bit. I know many of you check in here daily (or more often!) to see who will be joining us on July 19th. Truth is, no one new has registered since the last update to the June 3rd posting.

There are MANY people out there who just haven't gotten around to registering yet (Karen, are you listening???). We're planning on sending a reminder e-mail to our full mailing list very soon, so that will help a bit.

In the meantime, take a visit to the Contact page on www.saintsdrumcorps.com. Be a Saint - scroll through the 100+ e-mails that are posted, and pick one or two names to contact yourself. A simple e-mail will work - or choose your method if you know the person well.

Me? I'm calling Karen as soon as I'm done posting this, and sending some e-mails myself.

Tuesday Trivia: April 29, 2008

Which of the following people celebrating birthdays today were eligible to march with the Saints at its first rehearsal in July 1967?
  • Duke Ellington
  • Bridget "Barbara" Murphy Baxter McCarthy
  • Jackie Bodzas
  • Katie Kaufhold
Duke Ellington played a large role in defining our musical style as a corps, but he would have been too old to march in July 1967.

Barbara McCarthy was my mother's mother - my Nana. She, too, would have been too old to march, and if she were still alive, would be celebrating her 97th birthday today.

Katie Kaufhold is the first granddaughter born to my business partner. Her own father, Gerry Jr, wasn't even alive at the time the Saints began.

Any more hints needed?

Tuesday Trivia / Reunion Wrapup - November 13, 2007

Here are a few questions to ponder (I was going to say they were rhetorical, but I've been accused of using too many big words lately!):
  • When did you finally STOP smiling after the reunion?
  • What was the best part of the night?
  • How many people did you get a chance to talk to, and how many did you miss because the evening ended much too quickly?
  • Who sped up the clocks on Friday?
  • Is there a way to bottle up all those great feelings and keep them with us to be opened during the rough times?

For me, the grin has been on my face most of the time since Friday afternoon. Now that I've handed over my pictures to Rocky, I just have a couple of leftover reunion things to wrap up before I start scanning in all the pictures and articles I've been given lately.

Before Friday, I THOUGHT I knew what some of the things were that I missed the most about my marching days. I was wrong. What I really missed, besides all of you, was how much we laughed when we were together.

When you think back, we really did have incredible amounts of fun squeezed in between rehearsals, parades, competitions, and tag days. As I've told several of you since Friday, I've gotten more aerobic exercise from all the laughing this weekend than I've gotten from working out this entire year (for those of you who saw me, this is probably not a great surprise!).

Here are some things the mini-reunion confirmed from a planning perspective:

  • The next one HAS to last for a couple of days. Four hours really wasn't long enough - and that was with about 90 people present.
  • We have to pick a date and place before the year is out. This is critical for those of you who need to plan relatively far in advance to work out family and job logistics.
  • We need more PROACTIVE participants on the Reunion Planning Committee. 'Nuff said on that for now.
  • We don't need anything fancy to keep us happy. We just need places that will do the heavy lifting for us (like setup, food, and cleanup) so we can all spend our time together just being together.
  • It's time to place more focus on really finding Pete Boyle and all the other members of the Saints family with whom we haven't yet connected.

Thanks to those of you who were part of the reunion in any way, even those who sent along best wishes to be shared with those present (yes, your messages were read at the reunion!). If you were there and took pictures, make sure to send them along to Rocky. There are lots of new photos in Gallery 11 on www.saintsdrumcorps.com right now, so check it out!

It was great seeing you all - already looking forward to the next one!

Tuesday Trivia / Reunion Edition - November 6, 2007

First, about Friday (can't believe it's THIS FRIDAY already) - We're working on getting some good directions up on the site (Althea is working on putting them together right now). In the meantime, if you trust your favorite Internet map site or GPS device, the full address of the Post is 25 Brown Avenue, Iselin NJ 08830.

Should you have trouble finding your way (translation: if you get lost), here are some numbers to have handy (especially since the Post does not have a listed number):

  • Althea Mazar / cell number: 908-307-0934
  • JoAnne Parente / cell number: 908-229-7154

Any last-minute updates will be posted all over the place on www.saintsdrumcorps.com, but the first, best place to check is the Guest Book. If you won't have Internet access between now and the end of the week, please let us know by e-mailing saintsreunion@gmail.com for us to reach you by phone if need be.
